HackerRank · HackerRank Chakra: Agentic AI Interviewer for Technical Hiring
Chakra is HackerRank's AI interviewer: it builds an interview from a job description, runs the whole voice interview on its own (including hands-on coding work with follow-up questions about the candidate's approach), monitors integrity, and writes a scored report that cites the transcript. It is for recruiting and engineering hiring teams that want to replace early live screening rounds without losing evidence they can review.
Best for
Recruiting teams and engineering hiring managers, especially those already on HackerRank, who run many first-round technical interviews and want each candidate's hands-on work, AI fluency and follow-up answers captured in a scored, evidence-linked report
Not ideal for
Teams that hire only a few people a year, organizations that want published per-interview pricing, companies or candidate pools uncomfortable with webcam and screen proctoring, and hiring processes that need a human interviewer in every round
Who it's for
Recruiters, talent acquisition teams and engineering hiring managers running technical and AI-era interviews at scale
Chakra's main idea is that an AI interviewer should watch candidates do the work and then question them about it, not just score how well they talk. The setup flow, evidence-linked reports and ATS hooks make it practical for teams already running high-volume technical screens, especially on HackerRank. Before you rely on it, check three things: whether the per-attempt cost beats your current screening rounds, how its scores compare with your own interviewers' scores on a pilot role, and whether your candidates and local rules are comfortable with the level of proctoring it uses.
Who should use it
Talent acquisition teams and engineering managers who spend significant engineer time on first-round technical interviews, want to measure how candidates work with AI tools, and can pilot it on one role and compare its scores with their own interviewers'.
Who should skip it
Small teams with occasional hires, companies that need a published per-interview price before talking to sales, employers whose candidates or policies rule out webcam and screen monitoring, and processes where a human must conduct every interview round.
Per interview attempt
Not published
Note: HackerRank's blog says Chakra is priced per interview attempt with volume discounts, but no per-attempt rate is published, and HackerRank's pricing page does not list Chakra rates. The Chakra page offers a free trial and a demo booking. HackerRank's ATS integration guides list an active Chakra account, enabled through chakra-support@hackerrank.com, as a prerequisite.
Modalities

Available models
First-round screening for engineering roles
One Chakra interview can cover conversation, hands-on coding and follow-up questions, and the evidence-linked report lets an engineer review a candidate in minutes instead of joining a live call.
Assessing AI fluency
In the development canvas shown on HackerRank's product page, candidates work in a repository with an AI coding assistant and then have to explain their choices, which shows whether they understand the AI's output or just accept it.
High-volume or campus hiring
Chakra runs interviews whenever candidates are ready, applies the same rubric to each one, and sends invites and scores through Greenhouse, Workday or Ashby.
What is HackerRank Chakra?
Chakra is HackerRank's AI interviewer. It creates an interview plan from a job description, conducts the interview by voice on its own, has candidates do hands-on work such as coding in an editor or a development canvas, asks follow-up questions about their approach, monitors integrity, and produces a scored report backed by transcript evidence.
How much does Chakra cost?
HackerRank says Chakra is priced per interview attempt, with volume discounts as usage grows, but it does not publish the per-attempt rates. The Chakra page offers a free trial and a demo booking.
Does Chakra make the hiring decision?
No. Chakra scores candidates and gives a recommendation with supporting evidence. HackerRank's AI features page describes the Reporting Agent's output as a structured evaluation report for human review, and HackerRank's CEO told TechCrunch that the final hiring decision remains with humans.
How does Chakra prevent cheating?
It pauses the interview if the candidate leaves full-screen mode, connects another monitor or moves out of webcam view, and it logs missing or extra faces, phones and tablets on camera, and screenshots showing unauthorized tools such as AI assistants. An optional desktop app for Windows and macOS also blocks other applications, screen sharing, screenshots, virtual machines and copy-paste.
Which ATS does Chakra integrate with?
HackerRank publishes Chakra integration guides for Greenhouse, Workday and Ashby, and its blog also lists Eightfold. Chakra has an API for interview reports and candidate data and a Chakra MCP server.
Which AI models does Chakra use?
HackerRank's AI features page lists Anthropic Claude for the Interview Creator Agent and the live Interviewer Agent, and OpenAI for the Reporting Agent that evaluates completed interviews. Integrity features use Amazon Rekognition, Google Gemini and OpenAI. HackerRank says candidate data is never used to train AI models.
Is Chakra only for software engineers?
No. HackerRank's documentation says Chakra runs interviews for technical and non-technical roles. Its hands-on coding and development canvas features are aimed at engineering and AI roles, and the sample interviews on the product page cover AI engineers, forward deployed engineers, customer experience engineers and AI product managers.
Chakra sits inside HackerRank's hiring platform as a separate AI interviewer product, alongside its Screen take-home assessments and its live Interview product. A recruiter pastes or dictates a job description, answers a few follow-up prompts (experience level, location, must-have and nice-to-have skills), and Chakra drafts an interview plan with sections, time per section, evaluation goals and sample questions. You can reorder or refocus that plan by prompting it, mark requirements as must-have so they carry more weight in scoring, and try the interview yourself as a candidate before sending invites by email, CSV upload, a shareable link, or an ATS stage. The candidate then talks with Chakra by voice. It introduces the agenda, asks planned questions, probes deeper on answers, and keeps time across sections. For coding questions it opens an in-line editor where the candidate writes and runs code, and the product page shows a canvas with a real repository and an AI coding assistant in which candidates plan and fix tickets. After the work is submitted, Chakra asks follow-up questions about the approach and trade-offs, which is the main difference from voice-only AI screeners. The report gives an overall score and per-section scores on a 5-point scale, a summary of strengths and gaps, bullet points linked to timestamped transcript evidence, a full screen and webcam recording with a synced transcript, and a list of integrity flags with screenshots or webcam images. Integrity checks cover full-screen exits, extra monitors, missing or extra faces, phones and tablets on camera, and screenshots that show unauthorized tools; an optional Windows and macOS desktop app adds a locked-down mode that blocks other apps, screen sharing, VMs and copy-paste. HackerRank's AI features page says the interview-creation and live interviewer agents run on Anthropic Claude and the reporting agent on OpenAI. Documented integrations cover Greenhouse, Workday and Ashby, HackerRank's blog also names Eightfold, and there is an API for reports plus a Chakra MCP server. The trade-offs: HackerRank says pricing is per interview attempt with volume discounts but does not publish rates, candidates must accept webcam, microphone and screen monitoring, and the scoring-accuracy and fairness work described on the product page is HackerRank's own account. Chakra produces scores and recommendations; per HackerRank's CEO in TechCrunch, the hiring decision stays with people.
TechCrunch reported on October 5, 2026 that HackerRank is making Chakra generally available to its customers after about six months in beta. HackerRank's AI features page lists Chakra's interview-creation, interviewer and reporting agents as generally available, and its product page says more than 500,000 candidates have been interviewed by Chakra.
