Best for

Shopify merchants and store staff, especially solo founders and small teams without an analyst or developer, who want to query store data, update catalog and orders, set up discounts and automations, and adjust their storefront by asking in plain language

Not ideal for

Businesses not on Shopify, teams that want an agent to answer customers or resolve support tickets, stores on third-party themes that want Canvas, and anyone who needs fully unattended changes without review

Who it's for

Shopify store owners and staff, from solo merchants on Basic to teams on Advanced and Plus, who manage products, orders, marketing, analytics, and store design in the Shopify admin

Capabilities

  • Chat from any page of the Shopify admin on desktop, the Shopify mobile app, and tablets, using the current page, @mentions of products, orders, customers, collections, apps, and other resources, or Target mode clicks as context
  • Analytics: writes and refines ShopifyQL queries, builds new data explorations, draws line, bar, and donut charts, and exports results to CSV, Parquet, JSONL, or XML
  • Fills in admin forms from instructions or reference images, creates or edits products, collections, and discounts, and creates customers and B2B companies, with changed fields highlighted for review
  • Edits existing orders (add items, change quantities, line item discounts, shipping fees) and creates or updates draft orders, applying changes only after you click Update order or Save
  • Creates customer segments and discount codes or automatic discounts, creates and edits Shopify Flow workflows, and updates metafield values and metaobject entries
  • Drafts and redesigns Shopify Messaging email campaigns, writes product descriptions and blog posts, and generates and refines images from prompts and up to 3 reference photos
  • Generates single-page admin apps against the Admin API (orders, products, customers, discounts, content, analytics), with an app editor, code view, version restore, and one-click install (Grow, Advanced, and Plus)
  • Canvas (early access): builds a new theme from a description of your brand or restyles a copy of a Shopify or custom theme on a desktop workspace showing every template, with version history and Fix with Sidekick for publish errors
  • Adjusts theme settings, colors, typography, spacing, and section and block settings in the theme editor, including on unpublished themes
  • Keeps working on longer tasks in the background after you close the chat, and notifies you when the result is ready to review
  • Uses supported third-party apps such as Klaviyo, Judge.me, and Seguno inside a conversation after you approve them, and recommends, compares, and starts installing apps from the App Store
  • Checks Shopify Balance accounts and prepares transfers between them or to an existing payee, with a preview before you confirm
  • Memory of preferences and roughly three months of past conversations, plus up to 25 saved prompts as slash-command skills that can be shared by URL
  • Voice mode on desktop, mobile, and Apple Watch that responds in the language you speak, and screen sharing for step-by-step guidance (early access, desktop browser)

Limitations

  • Only works inside a Shopify store's admin: there is no standalone product, and no public Sidekick API is documented
  • Cannot talk to your customers or handle customer support conversations on your behalf
  • Features and usage limits vary by plan; app generation requires the Grow, Advanced, or Plus plan, and image and app generation have store-wide limits shared by all staff
  • App generation runs only in a desktop browser, and generated apps can only use the Admin API inside the admin, not themes, checkout, or customer accounts
  • Canvas is in early access for selected stores, desktop only, needs a plan that includes theme customization and the Edit code theme permission, works only with Shopify-developed and custom themes (not third-party themes), and does not support customizing for different markets, translating content in Canvas, or app blocks and app embeds
  • A theme edited in Canvas stops receiving theme updates, its theme files cannot be downloaded, and Undo cannot reverse a change Sidekick made (use version history instead)
  • Sidekick Pulse recommendations and screen sharing are in early access, and Pulse also needs recent sales activity, admin access, and Shopify Network Intelligence turned on
  • Not available in the Shopify admin in a mobile browser, and on Apple Watch it can answer questions but not make changes
  • Proposed changes still need a person to review and save them, so it does not run unattended store operations on its own
  • Shopify does not document which AI models power Sidekick

Use cases

  • Asking for a sales, costs, profit, and returns table for the top 100 products, charting daily sales for the last 90 days, and exporting the result to CSV
  • Adding two units and a 10% line item discount to an existing order, or building a draft order for a B2B customer with payment terms
  • Creating a segment of lapsed customers who are subscribed to marketing emails and drafting a win-back email campaign for them
  • Generating a small admin app that suggests reorder quantities from sales velocity, or one that creates discounted checkout links and QR codes
  • Describing a brand in Canvas and getting a new, unpublished theme to refine block by block before publishing
  • Setting up a Shopify Flow workflow that tags small orders, or a recurring weekly performance summary saved as a skill

Our take

Sidekick's advantage is access, not cleverness: it reads the store's own orders, products, analytics, and settings and can fill in the same forms a merchant would, so routine admin work and reporting become a sentence instead of a dozen clicks. Because every change waits for approval and respects staff permissions, it is low risk to try, and since it costs nothing extra on a Shopify plan there is little reason for a Shopify merchant not to use it. The limits are the boundaries of the Shopify admin itself: it does not talk to customers, generation features carry store-wide plan limits, and the most ambitious parts, such as Canvas and Pulse, are still in early access with real restrictions like no third-party themes. Treat it as a capable operator for your admin, and keep separate tools for customer support and anything outside Shopify.

Who should use it

Shopify merchants who want quick answers from their store data, faster catalog, order, and discount updates, and help with Flow automations, email campaigns, and theme changes; small teams without an analyst or developer who can benefit from ShopifyQL reports and generated admin apps.

Who should skip it

Stores on other ecommerce platforms, teams looking for an AI agent that resolves customer tickets, merchants on third-party themes who mainly want Canvas, and operations that need changes to happen without human review.

Strengths

  • No extra charge: included with Shopify plans
  • Works directly on your store data and admin forms instead of giving generic advice
  • Every proposed change is highlighted and waits for your approval
  • Respects staff permissions, so team members only reach what they are allowed to
  • Covers a wide range of admin work, from ShopifyQL reports to Flow workflows, admin apps, and theme design

Weaknesses

  • Only useful if your store runs on Shopify
  • App generation needs Grow or higher, and generation features have store-wide usage limits
  • Canvas, Pulse, and screen sharing are early access for selected stores
  • Does not handle customer conversations, so support still needs a separate tool

Image generation has a monthly limit and a short-term limit, and app generation has rolling hourly and weekly limits; both are store-wide and shared by all staff, and Shopify does not publish the exact amounts. Shopify offers a free 3-day trial, after which most plans cost $1 a month for the first 3 months.

Where Shopify Sidekick excels

Weekly performance review without an analyst

A merchant can ask for sales, profit, and returns by product, get a chart and a ShopifyQL exploration they can save, export the data, and save the prompt as a /weekly-summary skill to rerun each week.

Wholesale order entry

Describing a B2B order in a sentence lets Sidekick create the company if needed and build a draft order with custom prices, discounts, shipping, and payment terms, which staff review and save.

Custom internal tool for inventory planning

On Grow or higher, a store can have Sidekick generate an admin app that recommends reorder quantities from sales velocity, refine it in the app editor, and install it for the team without hiring a developer.

How Shopify Sidekick fits alongside other tools

Shopify Sidekick and Gorgias

Gorgias is an ecommerce help desk whose AI Agent answers shoppers and automates returns and order tracking. Sidekick works for the merchant inside the Shopify admin and cannot talk to customers. A Shopify store can use Gorgias for support conversations and Sidekick for back-office work such as orders, discounts, reports, and store design.

Shopify Sidekick and Yuma

Yuma resolves ecommerce support tickets end to end inside an existing help desk, billed per resolution. Sidekick does not handle support; it helps store staff analyze data and make admin changes. Yuma covers the customer-facing queue, while Sidekick covers running the store.

Shopify Sidekick and ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a general-purpose assistant that does not work inside your Shopify admin, so store details have to be supplied to it. Sidekick works on your live Shopify data and fills in admin forms directly, but only within Shopify. Merchants can use ChatGPT for open-ended research and writing and Sidekick for anything that touches the store itself.

Frequently asked questions

What is Shopify Sidekick?

Sidekick is Shopify's AI assistant built into the Shopify admin. It answers questions using your store's data and completes tasks such as editing products and orders, creating discounts and customer segments, writing ShopifyQL reports, building Flow workflows, generating admin apps, and designing themes in Canvas. It presents changes for your review before they are applied.

Does Shopify Sidekick cost extra?

No. Sidekick has no separate charge: Shopify says it is included with your Shopify plan, and its pricing page lists it as included on the Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Plus plans. Features and usage limits vary by plan. Those plans start at $29 a month for Basic billed yearly ($39 monthly), $79 for Grow ($105 monthly), $299 for Advanced ($399 monthly), and from $2,300 a month for Plus. App generation is available only on Grow, Advanced, and Plus.

Can Sidekick make changes to my store on its own?

No. According to Shopify's Help Center, Sidekick cannot make changes to your store without your approval. It fills in forms, order edits, or theme settings and highlights what it changed, and the change applies only when you click Save, Update order, or Apply. Staff can only use Sidekick for data and features their admin permissions allow.

What is Shopify Canvas?

Canvas is a desktop design workspace that Shopify launched on October 1, 2026. It shows all of a store's templates side by side, and you can ask Sidekick to build a new theme from a description of your brand or change a copy of an existing one, or edit blocks and text yourself. It is in early access for selected stores, needs a plan that includes theme customization, works only with Shopify-developed and custom themes (not third-party themes), and requires the Edit code theme permission.

Can Sidekick answer my customers or handle support tickets?

No. Shopify lists this as a limitation: Sidekick cannot talk to your customers or handle customer support conversations on your behalf. Stores that want AI for support use a separate help desk or support agent.

Is Shopify Sidekick the same as Sydekick?

No. Shopify Sidekick is the assistant inside the Shopify admin for running an online store. Sydekick is a separate local marketing agent from Synup for agencies and multi-location businesses.

About Shopify Sidekick

Sidekick sits inside the Shopify admin, on desktop, in the Shopify mobile app, and on tablets, and works with the page you are on as context. You ask in text or by voice, mention a specific product, order, customer, or app with @, or click part of the admin with Target mode, and Sidekick either does the work or walks you to it. The work is concrete: it writes ShopifyQL queries and charts for Analytics, edits orders and draft orders, creates products, collections, customers, B2B companies, discounts, and customer segments, updates metafields and metaobjects, builds and edits Shopify Flow workflows, drafts Shopify Messaging email campaigns, generates images, checks Shopify Balance and prepares money transfers, and adjusts theme settings in the theme editor. Proposed changes are highlighted in purple and only take effect when you click Save, Update order, or Apply, and Shopify states that Sidekick cannot change the store without your approval. Longer jobs keep running in the background after you close the chat. On Grow, Advanced, and Plus, Sidekick can generate single-page admin apps against the Admin API, with an app editor, version history, and rolling hourly and weekly usage limits. Canvas, launched on October 1, 2026, is a desktop workspace where Sidekick builds a new theme from a description of your brand or restyles a copy of an existing one while you watch, then hands it back for you to publish. Memory carries preferences and about three months of conversations, frequently used prompts can be saved as up to 25 shortcut skills, and supported third-party apps such as Klaviyo and Judge.me can be used inside a chat after you approve them. Sidekick costs nothing extra, but it is not a standalone product: it only works for a Shopify store, features and usage limits vary by plan, it never talks to your customers, and several pieces (Canvas, Sidekick Pulse recommendations, and screen sharing) are still in early access for selected stores.
