Tipalti · Tipalti AP Agent: AI Agent for Non-PO Invoice Capture, Coding and Approval Routing
Tipalti AP Agent is an AI agent inside Tipalti's accounts payable platform that takes non-PO supplier invoices from capture through GL coding and approver routing, explains every field it fills in, and flags bills that need attention, while your team reviews and approves every bill. It is part of Tipalti Accounts Payable (access depends on region, configuration and rollout phase) and suits AP teams that run, or are choosing, Tipalti for payables; at launch it stops at approval and does not execute payments.
Best for
AP and finance teams already on Tipalti, or choosing an AP platform, who process many non-PO supplier invoices and want capture, coding and approver routing automated with field-level explanations and a person signing off every bill
Not ideal for
Teams that want to keep their current AP software, organizations whose invoices are mostly PO-backed, teams expecting an agent that also schedules and releases payments, and small businesses looking for a free or self-serve invoice tool
Who it's for
AP managers, controllers and finance operations teams at growing and mid-size companies that use Tipalti for accounts payable and global supplier payments
AP Agent is a sensible, deliberately narrow first step: non-PO invoices are where AP teams spend the most manual effort on coding and approver selection, and Tipalti pairs automation there with field-level explanations, step-by-step autonomy settings and an audit trail, while leaving payment release behind its existing controls. The gap is between the announcement and the product page. The press release talks about orchestrating the whole AP lifecycle through payments and reconciliation, but the shipped scope stops at approval for non-PO bills, and Tipalti ties access to region, configuration and rollout phase without saying whether AP Agent costs extra. For current Tipalti customers it is worth confirming access with their Tipalti representative and testing it against their own invoices; for anyone else it is one factor in choosing an AP platform, and Kognitos is the listed option for automating AP on top of an existing ERP instead.
Who should use it
AP managers and controllers at companies already on Tipalti, or shortlisting it, who handle a large share of non-PO invoices and want AI to capture, code and route them while every bill still gets a human approval.
Who should skip it
Teams committed to another AP system, companies whose spend is mostly PO-backed, anyone who wants an agent that also releases payments, and small businesses that need a free or self-serve tool.
Tipalti Accounts Payable
From $99/month
Note: Tipalti uses a subscription with transaction-based pricing layered on top, and does not charge per user or per approver. Final pricing depends on the number of payments, legal entities, enabled modules and global payment methods, and custom quotes come from Tipalti's sales team. There is no free tier. Tipalti has not said whether AP Agent or Tipalti MCP carries an additional charge.
High-volume non-PO invoices
Bills that arrive without a purchase order have nothing to match against, so coding and approver selection are often manual; AP Agent fills both in, explains each value and routes the bill for approval.
Gradual rollout of AI autonomy
Because each step can be set to run on its own or wait for review, a team can start with every bill reviewed and let the agent complete routine steps once its coding proves reliable.
Audit preparation
Tipalti records what the AI filled in, which data it used and what a person changed, giving auditors a trail for AI-assisted bills.
Tipalti AP Agent vs. Kognitos
Kognitos is a general agentic automation platform whose AP Specialist role runs supplier invoices from email intake through extraction, coding, PO matching and ERP posting under plain-English SOPs on a deterministic engine, and sits on top of the ERP you already have; its AI Employees are in preview and pricing is consumption-based. Tipalti AP Agent lives inside Tipalti's own AP and payments platform, covers only non-PO invoices up to approval at launch, and relies on Tipalti's existing payment controls. Teams that want to keep their current AP stack, or automate more than AP, should look at Kognitos; teams that run payables on Tipalti get AP Agent in the system they already use.
What does Tipalti AP Agent do?
AP Agent connects invoice capture, GL coding and approver routing for non-PO supplier invoices into one automated workflow. It explains each field it fills in, flags bills that need attention, and routes bills to approvers. Your team reviews the recommendations and approves every bill within your configured workflows and controls.
Who can use Tipalti AP Agent?
AP Agent is part of Tipalti Accounts Payable and is not sold as a standalone tool. Tipalti says which AI capabilities a team can use, including AP Agent, depends on the Tipalti product it uses, its region, its configuration and the rollout phase, and asks customers to confirm availability with their Tipalti representative. Companies not yet on Tipalti would need to adopt Tipalti Accounts Payable to use it.
Does Tipalti AP Agent pay suppliers automatically?
No. Tipalti says AP Agent's launch scope ends at review and approval for non-PO invoices and that it does not execute payments. Approved bills are paid through Tipalti's existing payment workflows, approval rules and controls, so a person stays accountable for every payment. Tipalti's launch announcement describes AP Agent connecting capture through payments and reconciliation, but its product pages state that the current scope runs from intake through review and approval.
How is AP Agent different from Tipalti's other AI agents?
Each of Tipalti's earlier AI agents handles one AP task, such as invoice capture, invoice coding, PO matching, choosing bill approvers, tax scanning or resolving ERP sync errors. AP Agent connects several of those tasks for non-PO invoices into a single workflow, so a bill moves from capture to approval without someone passing it between steps.
How much does Tipalti AP Agent cost?
Tipalti does not publish a separate price for AP Agent or say whether it costs extra. AP Agent is part of Tipalti Accounts Payable, which Tipalti lists as starting at $99 a month, with transaction pricing per invoice and payment layered on top. Final pricing depends on payment volume, legal entities, enabled modules and payment methods, and is quoted by Tipalti's sales team. There is no free tier.
Which ERPs does Tipalti AP Agent work with?
Tipalti's accounts payable product integrates with NetSuite, Sage Intacct, QuickBooks, Microsoft Dynamics, SAP and Acumatica (US only), and can run AP for multiple entities and subsidiaries from one account. Tipalti does not list ERP requirements specific to AP Agent.
Can I use Tipalti data in Claude?
Yes, through Tipalti MCP, which is in beta and rolling out gradually. It currently supports Claude Enterprise only, with setup documented for Claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code. It is read-only and covers bills, payees, payments, virtual account balances and card transactions, and it grants no access beyond a user's existing Tipalti permissions. A Tipalti administrator must enable the AI integration, and Tipalti asks customers to confirm eligibility with their representative.
Tipalti is an accounts payable and global payments platform, and since 2025 it has offered single-task AI agents for invoice capture, invoice coding, PO matching, bill approvers, tax scanning and ERP sync errors. AP Agent, announced on October 22, 2026, is the layer that strings several of those tasks together. For a supplier invoice that has no purchase order, it captures the invoice, fills in the coding, picks the approvers and moves the bill along without someone handing it from step to step. Each field it populates comes with an explanation of why it chose that value, so a reviewer can accept or edit it, and bills that look wrong are flagged rather than pushed through. You decide which steps the agent completes on its own and which need review; users can question or override a decision in plain language, and Tipalti says corrections and business-specific instructions are applied to later invoices. Tipalti records the AI's actions, the field values, their data sources and any user overrides as an audit trail. The important detail is scope. Tipalti's press release describes AP Agent orchestrating the whole AP lifecycle, including payments and reconciliation, but its product page says the launch scope ends at review and approval for non-PO invoices and that the agent does not execute payments: approved bills are paid through Tipalti's existing payment workflows, approval rules and controls. PO-backed invoices keep using Tipalti's separate matching. Alongside AP Agent, Tipalti launched Tipalti MCP, a read-only connection that lets Claude Enterprise users ask about bills, payees, payments, account balances and card transactions in Tipalti; it is in beta, rolling out gradually, and limited to Claude Enterprise for now. AP Agent is not a standalone product. It is part of Tipalti Accounts Payable, which starts at $99 a month plus per-invoice and per-payment transaction fees. Tipalti says which of its AI capabilities a customer can use depends on the Tipalti product, region, configuration and rollout phase, and asks customers to confirm with their Tipalti representative; it does not say whether AP Agent is priced separately. That makes it a strong fit for Tipalti customers with heavy non-PO invoice volume, but not a reason on its own to move AP onto Tipalti.
Tipalti announced AP Agent, which connects capture, coding and approver routing for non-PO supplier invoices into one workflow with field-level reasoning, configurable autonomy, natural-language overrides and a full audit trail. At launch the agent stops at review and approval and does not execute payments. Tipalti also introduced Tipalti MCP, a read-only beta connection that lets Claude Enterprise users query bills, payees and payments in Tipalti.
