About GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot is GitHub's multi-model AI coding assistant, running models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and others, with automatic model selection. It works in VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode, Neovim, Eclipse, and Raycast, on github.com, and in the terminal through Copilot CLI. In the editor it provides inline completions, Copilot Chat, and agent mode, which plans and applies multi-file edits and runs commands. Beyond the IDE, the Copilot cloud coding agent works autonomously on issues you assign, in a GitHub Actions-powered environment, and opens pull requests for review — and on higher tiers you can also assign tasks to third-party agents such as Claude by Anthropic and OpenAI Codex. Copilot Spaces provide shared, auto-updating context from code, docs, issues, and PRs (they replaced Enterprise knowledge bases in November 2025), and Copilot can summarise and review pull requests. The Copilot SDK, generally available since June 2026, gives developers programmatic access to the same agent runtime. Pricing: Free ($0, 2,000 completions/month), Pro $10/month, Pro+ $39/month, Max $100/month, Business $19/user/month, and Enterprise $39/user/month, with usage metered in GitHub AI Credits; verified students get a free Copilot Student plan, and verified teachers and maintainers of popular open-source projects may get Pro free. Copilot's main advantage is its availability across many editors and its deep integration with the GitHub workflow, making it the lowest-friction option for teams already using GitHub.
