SAP · SAP Joule: AI Assistants and Agents for Finance, Procurement, HR and Supply Chain Work in SAP

Open SAP Joule

SAP Joule is SAP's AI assistant and agent layer for companies running SAP cloud applications. Employees ask business questions in plain language and Joule Assistants coordinate Joule Agents that carry out multistep work in finance, procurement, HR, supply chain and customer experience, using the user's own SAP permissions. Basic Joule is included in SAP cloud subscriptions, while agents are billed per action in SAP AI Units.

Best for

Mid-size and large companies running finance, procurement, HR, supply chain or customer experience processes on SAP cloud solutions (RISE with SAP or GROW with SAP) that want AI agents acting on SAP data within existing roles, authorizations and audit trails

Not ideal for

Companies not on SAP, teams that want a self-serve assistant with a published price, SAP ECC or on-premises S/4HANA customers without a committed cloud move, and organizations that need to self-host their AI

Who it's for

SAP cloud customers' finance, procurement, HR, supply chain and customer experience teams, plus the IT and SAP BTP teams that activate, build and govern agents

Capabilities

  • Joule Work workspace with Conversations for natural-language questions answered from SAP and third-party data, and Spaces that pull together the insights, apps and agents needed for one goal
  • Joule Assistants for specific roles and processes that coordinate specialized Joule Agents to run multistep workflows, such as the Accounts Receivable, Billing, Sourcing and International Trade Assistants
  • Prebuilt Joule Agents for finance, spend management, supply chain, HR and customer experience that call SAP skills, other agents and third-party applications
  • Grounding in SAP Knowledge Graph and SAP Business Data Cloud, so answers and actions use the business entities, processes and relationships in your SAP landscape
  • Agent gateway that limits agents to what the requesting user is authorized to do, a unique identity for each agent, sandboxed runtime, and explicit human approval for high-risk processes
  • Joule Studio for building custom agents, skills, apps and workflows with low-code or pro-code tools, frameworks such as LangChain and LlamaIndex, and a choice of more than 70 AI models
  • Model Context Protocol (MCP) and Agent2Agent (A2A) support for connecting Joule to third-party systems and external agents
  • Joule Work desktop app that works with local files in a folder you choose, runs Python, Node and shell scripts, searches email and calls MCP connectors such as Jira, asking before it writes files or runs commands
  • Joule Work mobile app (the rebranded SAP Mobile Start) with approvals on the go, plus a new voice-driven workspace with photo and document capture for SAP Early Adopter Care customers
  • SAP AI Agent Hub in SAP LeanIX for an inventory of SAP, custom and third-party agents with governance, adoption and ROI dashboards
  • AI Unit consumption and capability activation tracked in the SAP for Me portal, where admins can deactivate agents to stop further usage

Limitations

  • Built for SAP customers: Joule Base comes with SAP cloud subscriptions, and its value depends on finance, procurement, HR or supply chain processes already running on SAP
  • Staggered availability: SAP says general availability starts in October 2026 and Joule Work is only beginning its customer rollout, but many newly announced assistants are planned for Q4 2026 or Q1 2027, the new Joule Work mobile workspace is available only to SAP Early Adopter Care customers, and some assistants (such as the Workforce Planning Assistant) are slated to enter that program first
  • AI Unit prices are not published, so per-action agent pricing (0.02 AI Units per action) cannot be turned into a cost without a quote from SAP
  • Agent costs scale with the number of actions taken, and a single task can involve many actions, which makes spend harder to forecast than per-user licensing
  • SAP S/4HANA on-premises and SAP ECC customers get only select AI scenarios, and only if they commit to moving most of their landscape to SAP Cloud ERP
  • No self-hosted deployment is documented: Joule, its assistants and Joule Studio are delivered as SAP-managed services activated through SAP for Me
  • Rollout is an SAP project: capabilities are activated per product in SAP for Me on top of SAP Business AI Platform (which includes SAP BTP), and Joule Studio relies on SAP Cloud Identity Services, so SAP admins or partners usually handle setup. There is no self-serve sign-up, and SAP's Joule Studio page still offers only a notification for when its trial opens

Use cases

  • Asking Joule which open receivables carry the most risk and having the Accounts Receivable Assistant prioritize collections work and recommend next actions
  • Checking professional services bills for likely errors with the Billing Assistant before they reach clients
  • Classifying traded products and preparing compliance documentation with the International Trade Assistant (general availability planned for Q4 2026)
  • Refining a sourcing event and weighing geopolitical risk with Joule's Sourcing Agent in SAP Ariba
  • Building a custom procurement or service agent in Joule Studio that works on SAP S/4HANA data and connects to non-SAP systems through MCP
  • Using Joule Work desktop to pull SAP data, process it with a script and save a formatted report in a local folder

Our take

Joule is less a chatbot than SAP's bet that people will run back-office work by stating a goal rather than clicking through transactions. Its advantage is the context it starts with: agents that understand SAP data, roles and authorizations, with approvals and logs already in place, and no separate charge for assistants. The risks are timing and cost visibility. Much of the assistant portfolio announced in 2026 lands in Q4 2026 or Q1 2027, and agent use is metered in AI Units whose price SAP does not publish. If your finance, procurement or HR processes already run on SAP cloud, start with the included Joule Base and pilot one or two assistants that are already generally available while you watch AI Unit consumption in SAP for Me. If SAP is only one of many systems, a general enterprise assistant plus SAP connectors may be the simpler choice.

Who should use it

SAP cloud customers (especially on RISE with SAP or GROW with SAP) whose finance, procurement, HR, supply chain or customer experience teams lose time to manual, multi-screen SAP work, and whose IT teams want agents that respect existing SAP roles, approvals and audit trails.

Who should skip it

Organizations with little or no SAP footprint, SAP ECC or on-premises S/4HANA customers with no planned move to SAP Cloud ERP, buyers who need a published price before committing, and teams that require self-hosted AI.

Strengths

  • Grounded in SAP business data and process context through SAP Knowledge Graph and Business Data Cloud
  • Agents act only within the requesting user's SAP authorizations, with human approval required for high-risk processes
  • Joule Base is included in SAP cloud subscriptions at no extra cost
  • No separate charge for Joule Assistants; agents are billed per action, and unused agents cost nothing
  • Joule Studio supports low-code and pro-code agent building with MCP, A2A and a wide model choice
  • Web, desktop and mobile apps, plus a central agent inventory in SAP AI Agent Hub

Weaknesses

  • Only useful if your core processes run on SAP cloud solutions
  • AI Unit prices are not public, so agent costs need a quote
  • Many announced assistants are scheduled for Q4 2026 or Q1 2027 or limited to early adopters
  • Rollout needs SAP admin or partner work
  • No self-hosted option

Included with SAP cloud subscriptions

  • Joule conversational assistant across SAP applications
  • Embedded AI inside SAP solutions
  • No AI Units required

Premium AI (Joule Agents)

0.02 AI Units per agent action

  • Applies to SAP-delivered agents in 2026
  • No separate charge for Joule Assistants

Custom-built AI (Joule Studio)

Free to design; usage-based at runtime

  • Authoring environment and SAP AI Agent Hub access at no charge
  • Productive runtime for custom agents free through the end of 2026
  • Then billed on compute, storage, transactions and AI tokens via the SAP BTP Enterprise Agreement

Note: SAP does not publish the price of an AI Unit. Consumption and balances are tracked in SAP for Me, and usage beyond the purchased volume is billed under excess-use terms unless agents are deactivated. SAP says most generative AI capabilities that currently require AI Units will move into Base AI later in 2026, and that the per-user Joule Premium packages for finance, HCM, supply chain, spend management and customer experience are being retired. SAP Joule for Consultants remains a separate per-user offering at 35 AI Units per user per month.

Technical specs

Where SAP Joule excels

Prioritizing collections in a global finance team

Nestlé, quoted in SAP's SAP Connect announcement, says that with its SAP S/4HANA core rolled out across 140 countries, Joule and the Accounts Receivable Assistant can prioritize collections work by risk and business context and recommend next actions.

Catching billing errors in professional services

PwC says in the same announcement that SAP's Billing Assistant helps identify potential billing issues earlier, a process it describes as error-prone.

Asking natural-language questions of ERP data

Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen, an early adopter of the Joule Work desktop app, says information that took up to an hour of manual effort in its SAP S/4HANA environment is now available in seconds through natural language.

SAP Joule vs. competitors

SAP Joule vs. Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft 365 Copilot is the AI layer for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, grounded in Microsoft 365 work data and sold per user or bundled into some Microsoft 365 business plans. Joule is the AI layer for SAP applications, grounded in SAP business data and processes, with agents that execute ERP workflow steps under SAP authorizations and are billed per action in AI Units. SAP has announced agent-to-agent interoperability between Joule and Microsoft's agent frameworks.

SAP Joule vs. Cohere North

Cohere North is a standalone, model-agnostic agent workspace that connects to tools such as Slack, SharePoint, Jira and GitHub and can be deployed in your own VPC, on-premises or air-gapped. Joule is delivered by SAP as a managed service and is strongest where work runs through SAP finance, procurement, HR and supply chain processes.

SAP Joule vs. Agentforce

Agentforce is Salesforce's agent platform grounded in Salesforce CRM and Data 360, focused on service, sales and commerce. Joule plays the equivalent role for SAP's ERP-centered processes in finance, procurement, HR and supply chain, as well as SAP's own customer experience applications. Companies running both vendors may use each for the processes that live in its system.

Frequently asked questions

What is SAP Joule?

Joule is SAP's AI assistant and agent layer. Users ask business questions in natural language and get answers from SAP and third-party data. Joule Assistants coordinate Joule Agents to carry out multistep work in finance, procurement, HR, supply chain and customer experience, and Joule Studio lets companies build their own agents. Joule Work is the workspace (web, desktop and mobile) where people use all of this.

What is the difference between Joule Work, Joule Assistants and Joule Agents?

Joule Work is the user interface: a workspace with Conversations and Spaces. Joule Assistants are aligned to specific roles and processes and decide which agents to use. Joule Agents perform specific tasks such as analyzing data, triggering actions or executing workflow steps. SAP says assistants surface through Joule Work.

How much does SAP Joule cost?

Joule Base, the conversational assistant, is included in every SAP cloud subscription. Joule Agents are part of Premium AI and consume SAP AI Units: SAP-delivered agents in 2026 are priced at 0.02 AI Units per agent action, and assistants carry no separate charge. AI Units are bought annually and expire after 12 months, but SAP does not publish what an AI Unit costs. Running custom agents built in Joule Studio is free through the end of 2026, then billed on resource consumption through the SAP BTP Enterprise Agreement.

Is there a free version of SAP Joule?

Not as a standalone product. Joule Base, the conversational assistant, comes at no extra cost with an SAP cloud subscription, and building custom agents in Joule Studio is free, with production runtime for those agents free through the end of 2026. SAP-delivered Joule Agents consume AI Units. There is no self-serve sign-up: SAP's Joule Studio page offers a notification for when its trial opens, and SAP's pricing page asks anyone who wants to try SAP AI for free to contact SAP.

Is SAP Joule generally available?

Joule Base, the conversational assistant, is included in SAP cloud subscriptions. For the newer agentic layer, SAP said at SAP Connect on October 6, 2026 that Joule Work is beginning its customer rollout and that general availability for Joule Work, Joule Studio and Autonomous Suite assistants and agents starts in October 2026. Many individual assistants have later dates, mostly Q4 2026 or Q1 2027, and some are early-adopter only.

Can SAP ECC or on-premises S/4HANA customers use Joule?

Only in part. SAP says SAP S/4HANA on-premises and SAP ECC customers that commit to moving most of their current landscape to SAP Cloud ERP gain access to select AI scenarios. Joule's full assistant portfolio is aimed at SAP cloud customers, with RISE with SAP customers getting three assistants activated in their first year and GROW with SAP customers getting full portfolio access at onboarding.

Does SAP Joule work with non-SAP systems and other AI agents?

Yes. SAP says Joule answers questions across SAP and third-party data, Joule Agents and Joule Studio support the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and Agent2Agent (A2A) protocols, and the Joule Work desktop app connects to third-party tools such as Jira through approved MCP connectors.

SAP Joule vs Microsoft 365 Copilot: what is the difference?

Microsoft 365 Copilot works inside Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams and is grounded in Microsoft 365 email, files, meetings and chats. Joule is grounded in SAP business data and processes and runs agents that act inside SAP finance, procurement, HR and supply chain workflows under SAP authorizations. Many large companies use both, since they cover different systems of record.

About SAP Joule

Joule is SAP's conversational assistant inside SAP applications and, since 2026, the front end of what SAP calls the Autonomous Enterprise. It has three layers. Joule Work, unveiled at SAP Sapphire in May 2026 and beginning its customer rollout as announced at SAP Connect on October 6, 2026, is a workspace with web, desktop and mobile apps. Users ask questions in Conversations and get answers drawn from SAP and third-party systems. Spaces are workspaces that Joule assembles on the fly, pulling together the data, apps and agents needed for one goal. Joule Assistants are role-specific assistants, such as the Accounts Receivable, Billing, Sourcing and International Trade Assistants, that coordinate Joule Agents to run steps like prioritizing collections work, checking bills or classifying traded products. SAP says its Autonomous Suite will include more than 50 assistants orchestrating a subset of over 200 specialized agents. Joule Studio is the development environment for building custom agents, apps and workflows, from no-code to pro-code, with a choice of more than 70 AI models and connections to other systems through MCP and Agent2Agent (A2A). What sets Joule apart from general assistants is its grounding in SAP business data and process context through SAP Knowledge Graph and SAP Business Data Cloud, and its controls: agent traffic passes through an agent gateway so agents can only do what the requesting user is allowed to do, high-risk processes require explicit human approval, and activity is logged in workflow and change logs. Pricing follows SAP's three-layer AI model. Joule Base, the conversational assistant, is included in every SAP cloud subscription. Joule Agents consume AI Units at 0.02 AI Units per agent action, with no separate charge for the assistants that run them, but SAP does not publish the price of an AI Unit. Running custom agents built in Joule Studio is free through the end of 2026, after which it is billed on resource consumption under the SAP BTP Enterprise Agreement. The tradeoffs: Joule only makes sense if your core processes run on SAP cloud solutions, Joule Work is only beginning its customer rollout and many announced assistants are dated for Q4 2026 or Q1 2027 or available only to early adopters, and real costs depend on negotiated AI Unit pricing and how many actions your agents take.
