About Windsurf (now Devin Desktop)

Windsurf is an AI-first code editor designed around an agentic workflow called Flows. Its history matters for anyone searching for it: it began as Codeium's editor, was acquired by Cognition (the makers of Devin) in December 2025, and on June 2, 2026 the standalone Windsurf editor was rebranded to Devin Desktop — the vendor states it is the same editor with the same features and unchanged pricing, delivered as an over-the-air update. Unlike editors that offer AI as a chat assistant, Devin Desktop's agent can plan, execute, and iterate on multi-step coding tasks — reading files, writing code, running terminal commands, and checking the results in a continuous loop. Its local agent was called Cascade; that is now Devin Local (Cascade reaches end-of-life on July 1, 2026), and cloud runs go through Devin Cloud. It is built on VS Code, so it is compatible with most VS Code extensions and settings, and supports frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude), and Google (Gemini) plus Cognition's own SWE-1.6 model. Note the naming: Devin Desktop is the IDE (former Windsurf); the separate IDE plugin for VS Code/JetBrains kept the Windsurf name; and Devin — Cognition's autonomous software engineer — is a different product not listed in this directory. It is well-suited for developers who want to delegate larger chunks of implementation to an AI agent rather than collaborating interactively line by line.
