Devin Desktop is an AI-first code editor built around an autonomous coding agent. Its history matters for anyone searching for it: it began as Codeium's editor, Windsurf, which Cognition (the makers of Devin) agreed to acquire in July 2025, and on June 2, 2026 the standalone Windsurf editor was rebranded to Devin Desktop — the vendor states it is the same editor with the same features and unchanged pricing, delivered as an over-the-air update. Unlike editors that offer AI as a chat assistant, Devin Desktop's agent can plan, execute, and iterate on multi-step coding tasks — reading files, writing code, running terminal commands, and checking the results in a continuous loop. Its original local agent, Cascade, was retired and fully removed in September 2026; Devin Local is now the only local agent, and agents can also run in worktrees or in the cloud through Devin Cloud. The Agent Command Center (Spaces, a Kanban view, and multi-agent management) lets you run several agents in parallel, and third-party agents can plug in through the Agent Client Protocol (ACP). It is VS Code-based, so your extensions, keybindings, and settings carry over, and it supports frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and SpaceXAI plus Cognition's own SWE-2 models. Note the naming: Devin Desktop is the IDE (former Windsurf); the separate Windsurf IDE plugins kept the old name but are in maintenance mode; and Devin — Cognition's autonomous cloud software engineer — is a separate product with its own listing (see Devin). Cognition released SWE-2, now available in Devin Desktop and the CLI, with High (recommended), Medium, and Max variants.
Version 3.9.19 removed Cascade entirely; Devin Local is now the only agent available in Devin Desktop.
The standalone Windsurf editor became Devin Desktop via an over-the-air update, with the same features and unchanged pricing.
