Ironclad Agent

Ironclad · Ironclad Agent: Conversational AI Agent for Contracts and Workflows in Ironclad CLM

Open Ironclad Agent

Ironclad Agent is the conversational front door to Ironclad's contract lifecycle management (CLM) platform: you ask in plain language, and it searches your contracts and workflows, answers portfolio questions, or hands the task to a specialized agent for redlining, intake, renewals or analytics. It is built for legal, procurement and sales operations teams that already run their contracting in Ironclad, and is not sold as a standalone product.

Best for

Legal operations, in-house legal, procurement and sales operations teams that already run contracting in Ironclad CLM and want one chat entry point for search, intake, redlining, renewals and analytics, grounded in their own contract history and permissions

Not ideal for

Companies not using Ironclad CLM, law firms looking for legal research and drafting across client matters, small teams that want a self-serve contract review tool with published prices, and buyers who need to know which AI models process their contracts

Who it's for

Legal operations, in-house legal, procurement and sales operations teams at companies using Ironclad CLM

Capabilities

  • Single conversational interface for finding contracts and workflows, asking portfolio questions (for example, which contracts renew in the next 90 days or which MSAs have a liability cap under $1M) and starting the next step
  • Routes requests to specialized agents: Contract Review Agent, Renewal Agent, Intake Agent, Archive Agent and Analytics Agent, depending on which are enabled for your company and your permissions
  • Contract Review Agent (formerly Jurist) redlines against your playbooks, drafts and inserts clauses, and can also be launched from a workflow or the Microsoft Word add-in; precedent-based redlining from your repository is in early access
  • Renewal Agent builds renewal briefs with key terms, auto-renewal windows, savings opportunities and missed obligations to use as negotiation leverage
  • Conversational intake: describe a request or upload a third-party agreement, confirm the workflow Ironclad Agent suggests, and Intake Agent (where enabled for that workflow) pre-fills the launch form
  • Analytics Agent answers questions about contract and workflow data with charts, tables or graphs
  • Workflow Designer Agent lets workflow admins add fields, configure approvals, conditions, formulas and notifications, make bulk changes, and audit a workflow for configuration problems in plain language; it is off by default and is included only with a Platform edition
  • Contract Knowledge Graph: Ironclad's engine that links clauses, obligations, contract families and past negotiation decisions to ground answers in your own deal history
  • Remembers user preferences across sessions, such as role priorities, how vendor reviews are structured and preferred summary formats
  • Policy-Based Access Control evaluates who is asking and what they are accessing on every request, and agent interactions inherit the same rules
  • Ironclad MCP server exposes permission-aware, read-only conversational search (plus tools to create, read and update obligations with the Obligations add-on) to ChatGPT, Claude, Slackbot and Legora (beta)
  • Early access: Playbook Agent drafts review playbooks from your templates, precedents and existing playbooks, and Portfolio Benchmarks shows whether a term is common or unusual for your organization

Limitations

  • Only available inside Ironclad CLM; no standalone version is documented, so adopting it means adopting Ironclad's CLM platform
  • No public pricing: Ironclad quotes the platform individually, and specialized agents consume AI Credits beyond what your edition includes
  • AI Credits overage defaults to pay-as-you-go at a list rate of $1.00 per credit unless an admin buys credit packs or turns on the credit cap; the only published action rate is 10 credits the first time a renewal brief is viewed at your company, and other rates come from your account team
  • Redlining with playbooks still requires Ironclad Professional Services to create and optimize the playbook first; Ironclad says this is expected to change when Playbook Agent is generally available
  • Playbook Agent, precedent-based redlining and Portfolio Benchmarks are early access, not generally available
  • Policy-Based Access Control is generally available for new customers, but existing customers must complete a migration first
  • Contract Family Agent is a separate experience and is not routed through Ironclad Agent, according to Ironclad's help center
  • The AI models behind Ironclad Agent and Contract Review Agent are not disclosed
  • MCP access is officially validated only for ChatGPT, Claude, Slackbot and Legora; other MCP clients and dynamic client registration are not supported
  • Outputs still need human review; Ironclad says people remain responsible for final legal and business decisions

Use cases

  • Asking which contracts renew in the next 90 days, or which agreements fall outside a standard liability cap, without building a report
  • Preparing for a vendor business review by pulling the full contract family, spend by year and a renewal brief with savings opportunities
  • Uploading a counterparty's agreement, confirming the workflow Ironclad suggests and having the intake form pre-filled
  • Redlining an NDA or vendor agreement against the company playbook and seeing how the same clause was settled with that counterparty before
  • Changing approval routing or adding fields across a workflow by describing the change to Workflow Designer Agent
  • Querying Ironclad contracts from ChatGPT, Claude or Slack through the MCP server, with Ironclad permissions applied

Our take

Ironclad Agent is largely a new front end for agents Ironclad already sold, and its value depends on how much of your contracting already lives in Ironclad. Teams with years of negotiated agreements, playbooks and workflows in the system get answers that cite their own precedent and respect their permissions, which is something a general chatbot or a document-only reviewer cannot do. Teams evaluating CLM vendors should treat it as one input into a much larger platform decision. Before rolling it out widely, ask your account team for per-agent credit rates and decide whether to turn on the credit cap, since overage is pay-as-you-go by default.

Who should use it

Legal ops leads, in-house counsel, contract managers and procurement teams at companies already on Ironclad CLM who want faster answers about their portfolio, intake that fills itself in, and redlines grounded in their playbooks and prior deals, with access governed by the same permissions as the rest of Ironclad.

Who should skip it

Companies not on Ironclad and not planning to adopt it, law firms that need legal research across client matters, small teams looking for a self-serve contract reviewer with published prices, and organizations that must know or choose the AI models used on their contracts.

Strengths

  • Answers come from your own contracts, workflow state and negotiation history, not only the document in front of you
  • One entry point for search, intake, redlining, renewals and analytics instead of separate tools
  • Agent answers follow Ironclad permissions, including the new policy-based access rules
  • Ironclad Agent and Search Agent do not consume AI Credits
  • MCP server brings the same contract search to ChatGPT, Claude and Slack

Weaknesses

  • Requires Ironclad CLM; no standalone option
  • No public pricing, and specialized agents add usage-based AI Credit costs
  • Playbook redlining still needs Professional Services setup
  • Several headline capabilities are early access
  • AI models are not disclosed

Ironclad Agent pricing

Ironclad platform

Custom quote

  • Ironclad Agent is part of Ironclad CLM and is enabled by an admin in Company Settings
  • Ironclad Agent and Search Agent do not consume AI Credits
  • Your platform edition may include AI Credits for specialized agents
  • Workflow Designer Agent is included with a Platform edition at no AI Credit cost

AI Credits

$1.00 per credit list rate (pay-as-you-go)

  • One pooled balance shared across users, workflows and agents
  • Action-based: Renewal, Intake, Archive and Contract Family Agent use credits per completed task; a renewal brief costs 10 credits the first time anyone at your company views it
  • Subscription-based: Contract Review Agent and Analytics Agent deduct a flat credit amount per user per year
  • Discounted credit packs can be pre-purchased; admins can turn on a credit cap to stop overage

Note: Ironclad does not publish platform prices; its pricing page asks for a custom quote shaped by products, users and workflows. Credit rates vary by agent and action; apart from the renewal brief rate, they come from your account team. Failed or stopped tasks, demo and sandbox usage do not consume credits. Existing Contract Review Agent seat arrangements continue through the current contract term before moving to subscription-based credits.

Where Ironclad Agent excels

Getting a new procurement manager ready for a vendor review

Without context from the people who ran earlier deals, she can pull the contract family, spend by year and a renewal brief with savings opportunities and missed obligations in one conversation.

First-pass redlines on third-party paper

Contract Review Agent flags where a term departs from the playbook and, with precedent-based redlining, what was agreed with that counterparty before, so the reviewer knows both the standard and the history.

Keeping workflow configuration consistent

Admins can describe a routing or field change and have Workflow Designer Agent apply it, reuse existing properties and audit the workflow for gaps, instead of editing each setting by hand.

How Ironclad Agent fits alongside other tools

Ironclad Agent and Harvey

Harvey is a legal AI platform for law firms and legal departments, focused on legal research, drafting, due diligence and analysis of large document sets against vetted legal sources, without a CLM system of record behind it. Ironclad Agent works inside a CLM system of record, on a company's own contracts, workflows and approvals. An in-house team could use Harvey for legal research and drafting and Ironclad Agent for running the contract process.

Ironclad Agent and Ana by Vertice

Ana by Vertice negotiates software purchases and renewals with vendors by email, using Vertice's pricing benchmarks. Ironclad's Renewal Agent prepares renewal briefs and spots savings from your own contract terms, but does not run the vendor negotiation. A procurement team could prepare in Ironclad and negotiate SaaS renewals with Ana.

Ironclad Agent and Claude

Claude is a general-purpose assistant. Through Ironclad's MCP server, Claude can run permission-aware, read-only searches over Ironclad contracts, so teams who work in Claude can query their portfolio there and use Ironclad Agent inside Ironclad for intake, redlining and workflow actions.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ironclad Agent?

Ironclad Agent is the conversational interface to Ironclad's CLM platform. You describe what you need in plain language, and it searches your contracts and workflows, answers questions about your portfolio, or routes the request to a specialized agent such as Contract Review Agent, Renewal Agent, Intake Agent or Analytics Agent.

Is Ironclad Agent the same as Ironclad Assistant?

Yes. Ironclad Assistant was renamed Ironclad Agent on October 8, 2026, and existing access carried over. The rename came with new behavior: besides search and question answering, Ironclad Agent now hands requests to specialized agents.

How much does Ironclad Agent cost?

Ironclad does not publish prices; the platform is sold by custom quote. Ironclad Agent and Search Agent do not consume AI Credits. Specialized agents do: Renewal, Intake, Archive and Contract Family Agent per action, and Contract Review and Analytics Agent per user per year. Your edition may include credits, and overage defaults to pay-as-you-go at a list rate of $1.00 per credit unless you buy packs or set a cap.

Can I use Ironclad Agent without Ironclad CLM?

No standalone option is documented. Ironclad Agent is enabled inside Ironclad by an admin, and it works from the contracts, workflows and permissions stored in Ironclad CLM.

How do admins turn Ironclad Agent on or off?

An admin enables it under Company Settings > Ironclad AI > Ironclad Agents. Turning that setting off disables Ironclad Agent, AI search and MCP access for everyone in the organization. Admins can separately choose whether Ironclad Agent is the default homepage, and specialized agents such as Renewal Agent or Workflow Designer Agent have their own enable settings.

What is the Contract Knowledge Graph?

It is Ironclad's proprietary engine that connects clauses, obligations, contract relationships and past negotiation decisions across a company's contracts and workflows. Ironclad says it supplies the context Ironclad Agent uses, so recommendations reflect your own approved positions and deal history rather than only the text of one document.

Can I use Ironclad from ChatGPT or Claude?

Yes, through the Ironclad MCP server. Ironclad officially supports ChatGPT, Claude, Slackbot and Legora (beta) as clients. The conversational search tool is read-only and returns only results the signed-in user is allowed to see.

Does Ironclad train its AI on our contracts?

Ironclad says customer data used for training is anonymized and aggregated first, that it enforces do-not-train and zero-data-retention policies with external LLM providers, and that customers can opt out of training or benchmarking use.

About Ironclad Agent

Ironclad Agent replaced Ironclad Assistant on October 8, 2026. It opens as a single chat box, by default as the Ironclad homepage for organizations that turn that on, and also from the sidebar and a side panel while you work. A request is handled in one of two ways: Ironclad Agent answers directly from the contracts, workflows and data you have permission to see, showing the records behind the answer, or it routes the request to a specialized agent. Ironclad's help center lists Contract Review Agent (formerly Jurist) for playbook- and precedent-based redlining, Renewal Agent for renewal briefs and savings opportunities, Intake Agent for pre-filling launch forms from an uploaded agreement, Archive Agent for extracting metadata from signed contracts, and Analytics Agent for charts and tables built from contract and workflow data; the October release also added a Workflow Designer Agent that edits workflow fields, approvals, conditions and notifications from plain-language requests, and Playbook Agent (early access) for drafting review playbooks from your own templates and precedents. Ironclad says the context behind these answers comes from its Contract Knowledge Graph, a proprietary engine that maps clauses, obligations, contract relationships and past negotiation decisions across your portfolio, so a redline can show both where a term departs from your playbook and how you settled the same point with that counterparty before. Ironclad Agent also remembers user preferences across sessions, and the same contract intelligence is exposed through Ironclad's MCP server to ChatGPT, Claude, Slackbot and Legora (beta). What sets it apart from document-only contract AI is that it sits inside the system of record, with workflow state, approvals and permissions; the new Policy-Based Access Control means agent answers follow the same access rules as the rest of the app. The tradeoffs: it only works on top of Ironclad CLM, which is priced by custom quote; the specialized agents draw on paid AI Credits (Ironclad Agent itself and Search Agent do not); playbook redlining still requires Ironclad Professional Services to set up playbooks; several pieces, including Playbook Agent, precedent-based redlining and portfolio benchmarks, are early access; and the underlying AI models are not disclosed.

Updates from Ironclad Agent

LaunchIronclad Assistant becomes Ironclad Agent

Ironclad renamed Ironclad Assistant to Ironclad Agent and expanded it from search and question answering to routing requests to specialized agents. The release also announced the Contract Knowledge Graph, Policy-Based Access Control and the Workflow Designer Agent, with Playbook Agent in early access.

PricingSpecialized agents move to paid AI Credits

Eligible agents, including Renewal, Intake, Archive, Contract Family, Contract Review and Analytics Agent, moved from an uncapped trial to credit-based usage drawn from a pooled account balance. Ironclad Agent and Search Agent do not consume credits.
